Raise a Glass (or 2) at Dog Days for National Rum Day!

National Rum Day is being celebrated across the nation on Thursday, August 16, 2016. Dog Days Bar & Grill is very familiar with this delicious liquor, as are most of our happy customers. Lots of different drinks are ordered on a daily basis at our waterfront bar at the Lake of the Ozarks, and many of the most popular cocktails have rum in them.

Pain in the A**
For example, when you're in the lake area, you simply have to give a Pain in the A** a try. This rum-based cocktail is made from the mixture of two other extremely popular rum drinks - the Rum Runner and the Pina Colada. The perfect Pain, when poured, is split exactly down the center of the cup, each drink taking up one side.

Rumor has it that this is part of the reason this drink earned that particular name. Originally, bartenders had to mix each cocktail separately in a blender (extra-difficult if the bar only had 1 blender) and then carefully pour each out of two different containers into the one glass. We sell enough of these delicious drinks at the Dog that we keep them pre-mixed and ready for you in our big frozen machines, making it easy for us to serve and quick for you to get your hands on. Not a pain for us to make at all, but instead our pleasure!

Rum Runners
This cocktail was created in the 1950's because the Holiday Aisle Tiki Bar in Islamorada, Florida, had an excess of liquors they needed to get rid of. "Tiki John," a bartender at the establishment, took on the task of using that excess of rum and other liqueurs before the new inventory came in.

There was surely some trial and error involved, but the result was a drink recipe that we can't imagine being without today. Since this new cocktail contained quite a bit of rum, it was named after the "Rum Runners" that inhabited the Florida Keys in the early days, boot-legging alcohol across the state.

Pina Coladas
The earliest known stories about a drink similar to our modern-day Pina Colada are from the 19th century. Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresi decided to boost his crew's morale with a drink made from coconut, pineapple, and white rum. Tales were told of this tasty beverage, but the actual recipe died with Cofresi in 1825.

Ramon "Monchito" Marrero claims to have created the modern day Pina Colada recipe in 1954 when he worked as a bartender at the Caribe Hilton in Puerto Rico. After many months of experimentation, he finally decided on a recipe that he felt captured the essence of Perto Rico. In 1978 the Pina Colada was proclaimed as the national drink. Later the Caribe Hilton was given a proclamation stating they were the "Birthplace of the Pina Colada."

We've got a lot more rum-based creations for you where those came from, including the Raz Nannas which is featured on our Summer Specialty Drink Menu. This delicious drink contains Bacardi Banana Rum and Razzmatazz blended with raspberry and banana purée. Refreshing AND nutritious, with just a bit of a kick! Don't forget to ask your bartender to add a floater to any of our frozen drinks for an even bigger bang for your buck.

National Rum Day is a great excuse to head on over to the best pool at the Lake of the Ozarks, swim up to the bar, and order your favorite rum cocktail to sip in a lounge chair by the water. Of course, it doesn't have to be this Thursday when you do that. Celebrate rum with us any day of the week at Dog Days Bar & Grill. We're always in the mood for a celebration!
