How to Get a Winning Harbor Hop Poker Hand

The 19th Annual Spring Harbor Hop is a popular subject lately. Boating and poker are both at the top of everyone's conversations here at the best waterfront restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks. Harbor Hop happens on Saturday, May 7 this year.

The whole point of the day is to get out on the water and get another incredible boating season under way. That said, there is some competition involved, and everyone loves to win. The name of the game is poker, and just in case you are unfamiliar with the rules, or maybe a bit rusty, Dog Days Bar & Grill has summarized the different types of poker hands for you below. They are listed in order of lowest to highest hands.

High Card
After all of the cards are dealt, if you have none of the combinations listed below, you need to rely on your highest ranking card. A really good bluffer, and a stroke of bad luck for the entire table, can occasionally make this horrible hand a winner. If everyone has nothing, the highest card wins.

Two of a Kind (Pair)
This should be pretty self-explanatory. The matched cards must be of the same rank. In the case of a tie with another player, the one with the highest card of the remaining three is the winner.

Two Pair
Also exactly as it sounds, a player has two pair and an extra card. If more than one player has two pair, the highest fifth card denotes the winning hand.

Three of a Kind
Yes, you've got it, three cards of the same rank. A tie is won by the highest of the remaining cards.

Straight
A hand with five cards in sequential order that are not from the same suit. The highest card in a tie of two straights wins.

Flush
When you hold five cards of the same suit that are not in sequential order, you have a flush. In the case of two flushes, the highest card is the winner.

Full House
This happens when you have three of a kind plus a pair. Between two full houses, first look at the rank of the three of a kind, and if it's the same, move on to the pair to decide the winner.

Four of a Kind
Four cards of the same rank. Highest fifth card decides the winner in a tie.

Straight Flush
You must have five cards in sequential order that are all of the same suit. Highest top card wins a tie.

Royal Flush
A straight flush containing the high cards: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and 10. This hand cannot be beat, but watch out, because it can be tied. In that case, you'll just have to split the pot.

The Spring Harbor Hop will have 17 different winners this year. Fourteen will need to be earned, ten will be drawn randomly, and four are even being given out for the worst poker hands. In our opinion, everyone that participates gets to win by enjoying an exciting day on the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks. We love boating weather!

Our sister restaurant, Shorty Pants Lounge & Marina, is a card stop and has some of their own excitement happening all day long on Saturday, May 7. As for this Lake of the Ozarks waterfront restaurant, we'll be going strong all day long too. Harbor Hop cards have to be turned in by 7 pm, but we're not done then.

Travis Marvin takes the stage from 1-5 pm, Steven D. Hunt will take over from 5-9 pm, and then we've got the Travis Marvin Band from 9 pm - 1 am. Dog Days Bar & Grill is the place where the party never stops! Best of luck to all of you Harbor Hoppers. Have a great time, and remember to stay safe, boat responsibly, and have a sober captain on board. We want to see you back many more times over the summer.
