The Canine Cannonball is open to all dogs and their handlers. There are 3 different categories in which to compete. You are welcome to sign up for one, two, or all three. Here's a little more information about each category.
Big Air®
This competition is a long jump for dogs. They may begin at any point on the 40' dock. When ready, they run and jump as far as they can after a toy thrown into the water by their handler. The distance between the end of the dock to the point where the jumper's tail set breaks the water's surface is logged as the official distance.
Speed Retrieve™
In this event, there is a bumper toy suspended 2" above the water at the far end of the pool with a starting indicator light above it. The dog begins at the 20' starting mark on the dock, and once the indicator light turns green, the handler releases the dog. At this point, the time clock begins, and it stops as soon as the dog pulls the toy from the bracket.
Extreme Vertical™
This one is for the dogs that can jump high into the air. Once again, they begin at the 20' mark on the dock, and this time a bumper toy is extended 8' from the end of the dock over the water. It begins with the toy at a height of 4'6", and that height is increased by 2" increments as the competition progresses.
In 2014, Tony Handler and his dog Griz claimed an Outdoor Extreme Vertical World Record right here at Dog Days Bar & Grill. The jump was an amazing 8'9"! Maybe we'll be lucky enough to see another world record set again this year. Think your dog is up to the challenge?
Raising Funds for the Dogwood Animal Shelter
Our local no-kill shelter, the Dogwood Animal Shelter, will be onsite this weekend with four-legged friends that are looking for a new, loving home. After seeing all of these amazing, athletic dogs working so well with their handlers in the Canine Cannonball, you're going to want to take one home with you, and the shelter would be thrilled to help you out with that!
We will also have some cool Canine Cannonball t-shirts on hand for purchase to commemorate this incredible event. All proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go to the Dogwood Animal Shelter. You can get an awesome souvenir and help out this wonderful place at the same time. They make an excellent Father's Day gift!
